Hot trends in the kitchen Garden

There is no denying the fact that trends in gardening have changed over the years. When Covid hit, everyone started a garden, and I created my business! Nutrient dense food became the focus and people wants a beautiful space to grow their food in. The trend continues to this day!

People are developing an interest in gardening and are willing to add more greens to their diet with each passing day. Whether beginners or experienced, they are exploring more creative gardening options and trying new activities for their kitchen. I must admit maintaining a kitchen garden is not only one of the best ways to relieve stress but also a healthy alternative to buying packed foods. Having said that, it is also cost-effective and provides a variety of fresh produce at the stretch of your hand. So, if you are looking for some interesting hot trends in the kitchen garden, here are the ideas for you.

Planting different plants in one pot

Indoor kitchen gardening is quite popular, and people are willing to go the extra mile to add more and more greenery to their lives. They are growing edibles like microgreens, herbs, and indoor leafy greens. One of the best ways to grow indoor leafy greens and herbs is the containers. All you need to do is just pick the suitable size for the plant. You may use one big pot for multiple plants, especially when you are dealing with a small space. Also, you can use a large pot to plant a set of crops that are compatible with each other. Not only will it help you save space, but it will also serve as a great home decor idea.

Go Vertical

For an urban kitchen garden, space is no longer a constraint, thanks to vertical kitchen gardening. You can use walls, railings, or dividers to utilize this method. For this purpose, you may also repurpose an old bookshelf by placing vibrant herbs or a flower pot. Remember that when you opt for vertical gardening, the choice of plants makes a huge difference. Therefore, opt for vines and creepers that can use your balcony railings as a support.

Raised bed gardening

Gardening in raised beds is obviously my favorite, for a variety of reasons. With plants and vegetables that you consume daily, you can create a peaceful and stress-relieving shelter. Over the last couple of years, raised bed kitchen gardens have risen as the dominant way of growing food. It is a great asset in places where there is no proper soil. The free-standing garden beds are preferred as they help plants grow irrespective of the soil around them. Raised beds are containers made from anything constructed of wood, rock, or concrete or even repurposed! It helps harvest better, reduces weeds, and prevents soil from drying out too soon. The best part? It can be used for pollinating gardens and many other purposes, including better pest control.

Grow your own herbs

Get started with your little kitchen garden patch by growing simple herbs! It's amazing how easy perennial herbs can be. Get a container deep enough with good lighting and grow your herbs to use to tantalize your culinary palate! There is no real joy in sowing the seeds and watching the plants grow. Therefore, you should start with popular kitchen plants such as basil, mint, parsley, garlic, and lemongrass.

Go colorful

Grow the rainbow!

Grow a few chilies in a large pot and place it across a sunny window. It will produce a dozen or so fruits in summer that can be used fresh or dried for later usage. Typically, one pot is something you would need as it doesn't take much space and delivers amazing results. They look gorgeous, especially when they turn colorful red. There are other veggies that you grow in a bunch of colors. Have fun with this and experiment!

Go greenhouse

To make your kitchen garden productive, the best thing to do is go undercover. You may add a greenhouse and grow more by starting earlier in the year until the growing season. There is a huge range of styles available, from traditional to contemporary, and there will definitely be one for you – no matter what size you choose.

Make it part of your patio

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Not everyone has the privilege of space for sprawling veg patches. Luckily, there are other ways to integrate kitchen garden ideas. For more functional, modern spaces, a portion of the patio can also be used to create a stylish and functional setup. You may position your crops near the house and the outdoor seating spaces, which are easy to access for midweek meal cooking.

Intensive growing techniques

Urban farming usually occurs in small spaces due to limited space availability constraints. As such, gardeners have started adopting intensive growing techniques to maximize productivity. This is my specialty. These include succession planting which involves replanting crops in the same area to keep all parts of the garden in production. Additionally, they include intercropping which involves fast as well as slow-growing crops in a similar row at the same time. You may also approach intensive spacing which allows the growing of the crops as closely together as possible to maximize space usage.

Smart Gardening

Over the years, gardening has come a long way. One such area is smart irrigation, where technology supports gardeners in being more energetic and time efficient, such as smart lighting. It is slowly making its way into the outdoor spaces. With higher electricity costs and concern over the environment, changes have resulted in the use of energy-efficient, sustainable lighting solutions. Using solar lighting helps cut down electricity usage and beautifully illuminates your outdoor spaces. Moreover, you will see a significant positive change in your incoming bills.

The kitchen garden has really put the gardening world on its end and it's not even a new technique! It's a creative design that is finally getting it's due.
